METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on how long the gum has been stuck there and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the chewing gum was left not long ago and it hasn’t penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to get it off by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping the gum off with a putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a workable substance compared to a warm and sticky glob. Once that happens, we slide a putty knife or scraper under the gum. Then we move the scraper very slowly beneath the gum and the whole piece should peel right off the concrete.

The above method is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove gum that is already black, or is already smashed deep down into the concrete, we use a hot water power washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we do not use high pressure because that will sometimes ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our pressure washers never uses any more pressure than needed to safely clean concrete surfaces. These types of surfaces can be damaged a lot easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a couple of years old. Concrete can take up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our gum removal professional.
